Connect to your mobile device

You can connect your WLAN Pi Go to your mobile device now.

For this deep dive you should be using your Go with an iPhone or iPad with a USB-C port. If you do not have one of these with you, let an instructor know

The Go does also work with Android devices, but many of the apps we will use are only available on Apple devices.

Attach your Go to the back of your phone and use the supplied cable to connect it.

Check that the status lights are green.

Is this thing working?

A Go which is correctly connected to an Apple device which can support it will appear as an Ethernet device.

Check that your Go has been recognised as an Ethernet device by opening settings and checking for the Ethernet menu entry.

WLAN Pi presents itself to the mobile device as an Ethernet device

Open the Ethernet menu and follow through. You should see the "WLAN Pi USB Ethernet" interface is present and your phone has an ethernet address in the 198.18.42.x/24 range.

In previous releases, WLAN Pi Go used 169.254.42.1/24 and 10.42.0.1/24 IP addresses. But it now uses 198.18.42.1/24.

What's the story? The APIPA 169.254.0.0/16 range should only ever be used as a last resort option, and the IP is assigned by the machine itself after it fails to receive an address from a DHCP server. The 10.0.0.0/8 range is often used in enterprise networks. Apparently, when the Go and someone else's IP address spaces overlap... you know the rest of that story, right? 😊
